Moving to another state mid-tenancy
Answers
The most common way a perfectly good letter stops being a good letter.
What travels and what does not
The Fair Housing Act is federal and applies wherever you land. Your documentation rests on a clinician licensed in the state you left, and a new housing provider entitled to reliable documentation is entitled to notice that.
The five-state problem
If you are moving to Arkansas, California, Iowa, Louisiana or Montana, replacement documentation requires a clinical relationship of at least thirty days with someone licensed there. That cannot be compressed, and a move is exactly the moment people discover it.
Sequence it
- Find out which state you are moving to and whether it has a relationship rule, ideally before you give notice.
- Start with a clinician licensed there as early as you can, even before the move where telehealth allows it.
- Make the accommodation request to the new provider at or before signing.
- Keep the old letter. It is still evidence that a clinician reached a view, even where a new one is needed.
Breaking a lease to move
A separate question, and an accommodation does not by itself get you out of a lease. Some states allow early termination in specific circumstances, and some providers will negotiate. Do not assume the animal situation changes that analysis.
Common questions
- Can I keep using my old letter?
- Until somebody checks the licence state. A careful provider will, and it is the most common defect they find.
