What an emotional support animal letter costs
How it works
There is one thing worth paying for here, and a long list of things sold alongside it that are worth nothing.
What you are actually buying
A licensed clinician's time and professional judgement, and their willingness to put their licence number on a document a housing provider may check against a state board. That is the entire product. Everything sold beside it (a registration, a certificate, an ID card, a vest, a collar tag) has no legal effect anywhere in the United States and exists to raise the order value.
What it costs here
The clinical review fee on this site is $49, refunded if the reviewing clinician declines to issue. A letter runs 12 months, which is the ordinary term, because a clinical opinion about your present circumstances should not be treated as permanent.
Pricing patterns worth distrusting
- Guaranteed approval, at any price. A review that cannot decline is not a review, and the document it produces is worth exactly what the review was.
- Tiers where the expensive one is 'housing approved'. There are not two legal grades of letter.
- A charge for a registration or certificate number. No register exists to be on, and California requires sellers of these products to say so in writing.
- Per-animal pricing that scales the fee without scaling the assessment.
- Automatic annual renewal that reissues the document without a fresh clinical view.
Where the price is not the problem
In Arkansas, California, Iowa, Louisiana and Montana the statute requires a client-provider relationship of at least thirty days before documentation issues. A letter sold for delivery today fails that regardless of price. In those five states the cheapest letter and the most expensive letter fail the same test.
What a refund policy tells you
A service that refunds when a clinician declines is telling you the clinician can decline. A service with no refund path, or one that refunds only if you never submit, is telling you the outcome was never in doubt.
Common questions
- Is a free ESA letter real?
- If a licensed clinician evaluated you and wrote it, yes, and that happens inside ordinary treatment all the time. If it arrives from a website at no cost, nobody was paid for a clinical judgement, which tells you what the judgement was worth.
- Does insurance cover it?
- Sometimes, where the evaluation happens inside ordinary mental health care with your own provider. A standalone letter service is not usually a covered benefit.
- Do I pay again every year?
- A letter runs 12 months and renewal involves a fresh clinical view, which is the honest reason it is not free. What you should not pay for is a reissued PDF with a new date and no review behind it.
