Emotional support animal scams

How it works

Most of the money spent in this market buys documents with no legal effect. Here is the list.

Registrations and certificates

There is no federal register of emotional support animals. There is no state register. Nothing you can buy puts an animal on a list that a housing provider is required to respect. California legislated specifically on this, requiring sellers of these products to state in writing that they do not confer the rights of an assistance animal, which tells you what the legislature made of them.

ID cards, vests, tags and collars

Not documentation, and no statute gives them weight. A vest can make daily life smoother by heading off questions, and that is a practical convenience rather than a legal status. Buying one does not make an animal an assistance animal and cannot.

Guaranteed approval

This is the clearest signal in the whole market. An assessment that cannot decline is not an assessment, and the document it produces is worth exactly what the assessment was. It also inverts the thing that gives a letter value: a housing provider trusts it because a licensed professional put their name to a judgement, and a judgement that was never in doubt is not one.

Instant letters

In Arkansas, California, Iowa, Louisiana and Montana these are not merely low quality, they fail a statutory requirement outright. Elsewhere, speed is a proxy for whether anybody read your answers.

Letters from out-of-state clinicians

The most common defect and the least visible. Check the licence state on the letter against where you live before you rely on it with a landlord.

Common questions

I already bought a registration. Is it worth anything?
Not as documentation. If it came with an actual letter from a licensed clinician who assessed you, that letter may be fine on its own; the registration adds nothing.
How do I check a clinician is real?
Search the licence number on the issuing state's licensing board site. That is exactly what a careful housing provider does.

Start an assessment

A clinician licensed in your state reviews it and decides. The fee is refunded if they decline to issue, because a review that cannot say no is not a review.
