Who can write an emotional support animal letter
How it works
The licence, and the state that issued it, do more work here than the job title does.
The professionals
In practice: psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, licensed professional counselors, licensed marriage and family therapists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, and in many cases a primary care physician who knows you. What matters is a current licence, a scope of practice that covers the judgement being made, and an actual evaluation.
The licence state is the part people miss
A clinician must be licensed in the state where the documentation is provided. A letter from an out-of-state clinician is the single most common reason a letter fails when a housing provider looks closely, and it is not something wording can fix. California puts this in the statute explicitly; other states get to the same place through the reliability requirement.
What makes a letter unreliable on its face
- No licence number, or a number that does not match the state board.
- A clinician licensed somewhere else.
- An expired licence. A letter states an expiration date precisely so this can be checked.
- No evaluation behind it. A form that took your word for a diagnosis is not an assessment.
- In the five relationship-rule states, a document issued sooner than the statute permits.
Your own clinician is usually the best option
If you already see someone, ask them first. They know you, the relationship requirement is already satisfied in states that impose one, and a letter from a treating clinician is the most credible document available. Some decline on policy grounds, which is their right, and that is the point at which a service like this one becomes useful.
Common questions
- Can my GP write one?
- Often yes, where they know you and the judgement is within their scope of practice.
- Can a clinician in another state write mine?
- That is the most common defect in a rejected letter. The clinician needs to be licensed where the documentation is provided.
