Emotional support animals and borderline personality disorder
By condition
A condition where the animal's reported role maps unusually closely onto what the statute asks about.
What it limits
Emotional regulation, sleep, sustaining relationships and working, frequently and substantially. Housing instability is common, often for reasons connected to the condition rather than incidental to it, which makes an accommodation that protects a tenancy genuinely valuable.
A diagnosis is not the test and does not decide this. The question is whether the impairment substantially limits a major life activity, and whether this animal alleviates a symptom or effect of it. Both halves have to hold, a licensed clinician decides, and the answer can be no.
What the animal is reported to do
Two things that map closely onto the second half of the test. First, a stable attachment that does not fluctuate, in a condition defined partly by the instability of attachment. Second, interruption: a physical demand for attention during escalation, which is the same mechanism that makes these animals useful in panic and in PTSD.
Where the documentation should come from
A treating clinician, where you have one, and particularly one involved in dialectical behaviour therapy or similar structured treatment. They can speak to the specific function the animal serves, which is exactly what a weak letter fails to do.
A letter should never name the diagnosis, and this is a condition where that rule does real work: it carries stigma, including among professionals, and a housing provider has no entitlement to it.

Common questions
- Does BPD qualify?
- It can, on the ordinary test. A clinician has to conclude that it substantially limits a major life activity for you and that the animal alleviates a symptom of it.
