Emotional support animals and chronic illness

By condition

A large and under-served group, and the documentation is usually weaker than the underlying case deserves.

The category

Long Covid, ME/CFS, lupus, multiple sclerosis, Crohn disease, endometriosis and a long list of others. What they share for these purposes is a pattern of fluctuating, frequently invisible limitation, which is precisely the situation the reasonable accommodation duty was written for and precisely the one housing providers find hardest to see.

A diagnosis is not the test and does not decide this. The question is whether the impairment substantially limits a major life activity, and whether this animal alleviates a symptom or effect of it. Both halves have to hold, a licensed clinician decides, and the answer can be no.

Why the documentation often understates it

People with chronic illness are used to compressing their situation into something a busy clinician can absorb in two minutes, and that habit produces documentation that sounds mild. The test asks what is substantially limited, so a letter describing fatigue is weaker than one describing that you cannot reliably work a full week, leave the building on a bad day, or keep on top of your own housing.

The invisible disability problem

Where a disability is not obvious, a housing provider may ask for reliable documentation. That is the situation almost everyone with chronic illness is in, and it is not an accusation. It is also the limit of what they may ask: not your diagnosis, not your records, not a demonstration.

What the animal is reported to do

  • Anchoring a routine through unpredictable capacity.
  • Reducing the isolation of long periods at home, which is the part that most often turns a chronic illness into a mental health problem as well.
  • For some, alerting to a change before the person notices it themselves. If the animal is trained to do that, it is a service animal, and that is a stronger position.

If you are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 in the United States to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. It is free and available at any hour. An assessment on this site is not a crisis service and is not a substitute for one.

Common questions

Does Long Covid qualify?
It can, on the same test as anything else: whether it substantially limits a major life activity for you, and whether the animal alleviates a symptom or effect of it.

Start an assessment

A clinician licensed in your state reviews it and decides. The fee is refunded if they decline to issue, because a review that cannot say no is not a review.
