Emotional support animals and eating disorders

A letter can support housing. It is not treatment, and a service that blurs that line is doing harm.
Eating disorders have the highest mortality of any psychiatric condition, and an emotional support animal letter does nothing about that. If you are unwell, treatment is the thing that matters and this document is at most a way of protecting your housing while you get it. The National Eating Disorders Association helpline can point you to care.
The housing question
Separately from treatment, the housing question is real. Eating disorders substantially limit eating, sleeping, concentrating and working, which are named major life activities, so the first half of the test is frequently met without difficulty.
A diagnosis is not the test and does not decide this. The question is whether the impairment substantially limits a major life activity, and whether this animal alleviates a symptom or effect of it. Both halves have to hold, a licensed clinician decides, and the answer can be no.
What the animal is reported to do
Routine and company at mealtimes come up often, as does the animal being a reason to maintain a level of function on days when self-care has otherwise stopped. Stable housing matters enormously to recovery, and an accommodation that keeps somebody housed with their animal is doing something worth doing.
What a responsible clinician will do
Ask about treatment, and where someone is acutely unwell, say that a letter is not the priority. That is not a refusal to help. It is the difference between a clinician and a form.
