Emotional support animals and chronic insomnia
By condition
Sleep is a major life activity, which makes this a real basis and a frequently misunderstood one.
Sleep is a major life activity
That matters, because it means chronic insomnia can satisfy the first half of the test directly rather than through something else. Where sleep is substantially limited over a sustained period, the impairment is doing exactly what the statute describes.
A diagnosis is not the test and does not decide this. The question is whether the impairment substantially limits a major life activity, and whether this animal alleviates a symptom or effect of it. Both halves have to hold, a licensed clinician decides, and the answer can be no.
The complication
Insomnia is very often secondary to something else: anxiety, depression, PTSD, pain, or a medication. A clinician assessing you will want to understand what is driving it, and the documentation is frequently stronger where it addresses the underlying impairment rather than the sleeplessness alone. It is also one of the conditions where a clinician may reasonably say that a referral is the appropriate step rather than a letter.
What the animal is reported to do
Usually presence at night reducing hypervigilance, and a fixed morning routine that stabilises a sleep schedule. The second one is the part housing providers find most credible, because it is concrete.
If you are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 in the United States to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. It is free and available at any hour. An assessment on this site is not a crisis service and is not a substitute for one.
Common questions
- Can I get an ESA letter for insomnia alone?
- Potentially, since sleep is a major life activity. In practice a clinician will usually want to understand what is causing it, and may conclude the letter is not the right answer.
