Can a letter be revoked?
Answers
Rare, and worth understanding because a revoked letter is worse than an expired one.
When it happens
- The clinician concludes the documentation was obtained on information that was not accurate.
- The clinical picture changes such that they no longer support the opinion.
- An administrative error: the wrong animal, the wrong person, a document issued in circumstances that did not meet a state requirement.
- The clinician licence lapses or is suspended, which does not revoke the document but undermines it in the same practical way.
What it means
A revoked letter is not evidence of a current clinical opinion, and a housing provider who checks a register and sees revoked has a strong reliability objection. It is a worse position than an expired letter, because expiry reads as staleness while revocation reads as withdrawal.
An accommodation already granted
Does not automatically end. The provider granted it on the documentation available at the time. What they can do is ask for current documentation, and you would need something else to supply.
This is one reason a public verification register is worth having. It means a provider can check the current status rather than relying on a PDF that looked fine when it was printed, and it means a withdrawn opinion does not keep circulating.
Common questions
- Can a landlord revoke it?
- No. A landlord can decline to rely on it. Only the issuing clinician can withdraw the opinion.
