Emotional support animals and health anxiety
By condition
Frequently and genuinely limiting, with one complication worth naming before you apply.
What it limits
Health anxiety consumes time and attention the way a compulsion does: checking, researching, seeking reassurance, avoiding. Where that substantially limits concentrating, working or sleeping, the first half of the test is met on ordinary terms.
A diagnosis is not the test and does not decide this. The question is whether the impairment substantially limits a major life activity, and whether this animal alleviates a symptom or effect of it. Both halves have to hold, a licensed clinician decides, and the answer can be no.
The complication
Reassurance-seeking is part of the condition, and clinicians treating it are usually working to reduce it rather than supply more of it. A letter obtained as reassurance would be feeding the thing being treated. That is a real clinical consideration, and it is why a clinician who knows you may want to talk about the request rather than simply answer it.
That is not a reason not to ask. It is a reason the conversation is worth having with somebody who knows your history, and a reason to be wary of any service that treats the question as a formality.
What the animal is reported to do
Most often interrupting a spiral by requiring attention, and providing a present-tense demand that competes with an anticipated future one. Where contamination fears are prominent, an animal in the home can make things harder rather than easier, and an honest assessment will raise that.
If you are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 in the United States to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. It is free and available at any hour. An assessment on this site is not a crisis service and is not a substitute for one.
Common questions
- Does health anxiety count as a disability?
- It can, where it substantially limits a major life activity. The label does not decide it.
