Emotional support animals and schizophrenia

By condition

Housing instability is one of the most serious risks this condition carries, which makes the accommodation unusually worth having.

Why housing matters more here than almost anywhere

Loss of stable housing is one of the strongest predictors of poor outcomes in psychotic illness, and people with these diagnoses are over-represented among those who lose it. An accommodation that keeps somebody housed with an animal they rely on is doing serious protective work, and the reasonable accommodation duty applies in full.

A diagnosis is not the test and does not decide this. The question is whether the impairment substantially limits a major life activity, and whether this animal alleviates a symptom or effect of it. Both halves have to hold, a licensed clinician decides, and the answer can be no.

Why a treating team is the right route

More than for most conditions, the useful letter here comes from people already involved in your care: a community mental health team, a case manager, a treating psychiatrist. They know the history, they can speak to what the animal does, and in the five relationship-rule states the required relationship already exists. A standalone online assessment is the weakest version of this request, not the strongest.

What a housing provider may ask

  • Reliable documentation that a disability exists and that the animal is needed. Nothing more.
  • Not your diagnosis. This matters especially here, where disclosure carries real stigma and can change how a provider treats every later interaction.
  • Not a psychiatric history, and not access to your team.

Supported and subsidised housing

Much of the housing in play will be subsidised, supported or run by a provider receiving federal assistance. That brings Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act in alongside the Fair Housing Act, which is an additional obligation with its own enforcement path, and one HUD did not touch in May 2026.

If you are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 in the United States to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. It is free and available at any hour. An assessment on this site is not a crisis service and is not a substitute for one.

Common questions

Can a provider refuse because of the diagnosis?
No. A refusal must rest on the individual animal or on the ordinary grounds. A refusal resting on assumptions about the condition is the kind of thing the statute exists to prevent.

Start an assessment

A clinician licensed in your state reviews it and decides. The fee is refunded if they decline to issue, because a review that cannot say no is not a review.
