Emotional support sugar gliders
By animal
Another species where the law on keeping them decides more than housing law does.
Check legality before anything else. A reasonable accommodation does not create a right to keep an animal the law prohibits, so where a state or city bans the species the housing question never arises. State lists change, and a city can be stricter than its state.
Where they are prohibited
As of September 2026, sugar gliders are prohibited in California, Alaska, Hawaii, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, and some cities ban them independently, including New York City and St Paul. California regulates them under its restricted species rules on the risk of a feral population establishing.
Where they are lawful
The accommodation analysis is ordinary and usually easy. They are small, contained, and pose no threat or meaningful damage risk, so a refusal would have to rest on documentation rather than on the animal.
The one real objection
Noise, which surprises people. Sugar gliders are nocturnal and vocal, and the barking and crabbing carries at night in a building with thin walls. That is a genuine nuisance question if it becomes persistent, and it is the way one of these accommodations actually gets into trouble.
Numbers
Sugar gliders are intensely social and are usually kept in pairs or groups for welfare reasons, so a request often covers more than one animal. Each animal has to be justified rather than assumed, and the documentation should address that directly.
Where the animal is lawful, the species is something a clinician records rather than something that decides the outcome. The letter still rests on a licensed clinician concluding that you have a disability and that this animal alleviates a symptom of it.
Common questions
- Can I keep a pair?
- Often, and it is the welfare-appropriate arrangement. Say so in the documentation rather than leaving a provider to infer it.
