How long an emotional support animal letter takes

How it works

The honest answer has two halves, and the one that matters is decided by your state rather than by us.

In most states

A clinical review takes as long as it takes a clinician to read your assessment and form a view, which is usually a day or two rather than a fortnight. What it should never be is instant. A judgement that took no time was not made.

In five states, at least thirty days

Arkansas, California, Iowa, Louisiana and Montana require the client-provider relationship to predate the documentation by at least thirty days. Louisiana requires two evaluation sessions on top of that and writes online letter services out of the definition of a therapeutic relationship. In those states no lawful letter can be produced sooner, and services advertising same-day delivery are either ignoring the statute or hoping you will not check.

What that means if you are in a hurry

  • Start the relationship before you need the document. The clock only runs forward and nothing accelerates it.
  • If you are already seeing a therapist or a doctor, ask them first. An existing relationship may already satisfy the requirement, and that is the fastest lawful route by a wide margin.
  • If a housing deadline is already on you in one of those states, say so to the housing provider in writing. A request in progress is a better position than a document that fails the statute.

Common questions

Can I get an ESA letter the same day?
Outside the five relationship-rule states a review can be quick. Inside them, no lawful letter can issue that fast.
How long does the landlord then have?
There is no single federal deadline. A provider must respond promptly, and unexplained delay can amount to a constructive denial.

Start an assessment

A clinician licensed in your state reviews it and decides. The fee is refunded if they decline to issue, because a review that cannot say no is not a review.
